South Carolina’s First Human Case of West Nile Virus This Year

Posted by Mosquito Squad

December 20, 2023

West Nile virusIn July, we reported that West Nile Virus is on the rise in South Carolina and that they were finding it in mosquito pools back then. History shows that once it shows up in mosquitoes for the summer, a human case is sure to follow.

And it did.

A person in Pee Dee became the first human case of West Nile virus in South Carolina this summer.

Watch for West Nile Symptoms

Now is the part of the year where you must watch for symptoms of West Nile virus so you can receive medical help if needed.

The flu is not very active in summer, so if you have flu-like symptoms, there is a chance it came from a mosquito bite.

Keep an eye out for body aches, headache, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. If a stiff neck, high fever, coma, seizure, or paralysis follows, this is a sign of serious neurological illness such as meningitis or encephalitis and you should seek medical attention immediately.

Summer Storms Create Mosquito Swarms

Since the beginning of August, we have received regular summer storms. While rarely do they ruin the whole day, they are heavy downpours in the afternoon and evening which have compounded our summer mosquito problem.

After a pretty dry July, you might be wondering, why are the mosquitoes out now? Well, standing water is the name of the game for mosquito eggs to hatch and thrive. Be sure to follow the Ts of mosquito control after each and every summer downpour to be sure you are not contributing to the dangerous mosquito problem in Greenville.
