Keep Mosquitoes From Ruining Your Outdoor Party

We’ve all been there; just as you’re about to enjoy a little downtime with friends and family on the patio, you start to notice a pesky buzzing sound. There’s nothing that can ruin an outdoor evening faster than a swarm of annoying mosquitoes! This summer, try using these easy ways to keep mosquitoes from bothering you and your guests.

Start a Breeze

On our commonly humid and muggy St. Louis evenings, bring a portable fan outdoors and face it towards your main entertaining areas. The breeze will help to not only keep your guests cool but also blow uninvited mosquitoes away from your party.

DIY Citronella Candles

Sure, you can always buy outdoor citronella candles, but you craft your own, you can mix in other scents too, perfect for those who simply don’t like the strong aroma of citronella by itself. Start by gathering old candles, citronella oil, soup cans, and any other essential oils you’d like to add. Then, follow this DIY Citronella Candle tutorial we found on Garden Therapy!

Plant a Garden

There are several plants that mosquitoes don’t like, that grow well in summer. Try planting citronella, basil, mint, rosemary, catnip, and wonderful smelling lavender around your outdoor living spaces. One great way to add these plants around elevated porches and decks is by using containers and pots! You can then move these plants to easily surround your entertaining spaces. You can even encourage your guests to rub plant leaves, helping to release oils into the air.

Dump the Water

This step is one of the important ones we always come back to; and for good reason. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, in places like birdbaths, ponds, or lawn areas that don’t drain well after rainstorms. Make sure you empty standing water spots regularly, to keep mosquito breeding areas eliminated.

Keep it Clean

Unused plant pots, outdoor toys, and built-up debris around your yard can create a habitat for mosquitoes to thrive in. Keep your yard maintained and cleaned up, to make sure you aren’t letting mosquitoes thrive in your very own outdoor spaces.
