Back-to-School: How to Protect Your Kids from Mosquito Bites

As the excitement of the new school year begins, parents everywhere focus on preparing their children for success. This year is especially significant for me because it’s my child’s first year of kindergarten. Amidst the rush of getting school supplies and picking out the perfect backpack, I also think about ways to protect my little one from pesky mosquito bites during recess, sports, and after-school activities. While summer may be winding down, warm weather often lingers, keeping mosquitoes active. Here are some practical natural strategies I’m using to protect my child, which you can use too, this school season.

1. Dress for Protection Against Mosquitoes

As parents, we know how important it is to keep our kids safe, and one of the simplest ways to do that is through their clothing. This year, I’m choosing light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants for my kindergartner to reduce the chances of mosquito bites, as mosquitoes are more attracted to dark and bright colors. I also opt for loose-fitting clothing, which provides better protection since mosquitoes can bite through tight fabrics. I will ensure the material is breathable, keeping my child comfortable on warmer days while offering ample coverage.

2. Optimize Outdoor Spaces to Prevent Mosquitoes

The environment around your child plays a crucial role in mosquito prevention. I’ve been in touch with my child’s school to ensure playgrounds and sports fields are well-maintained and free of standing water, a favorite breeding ground for mosquitoes. I’m keeping our yard clean and well-trimmed at home to deter mosquitoes from settling in. Removing standing water from birdbaths, gutters, and plant saucers has become part of our routine to reduce mosquito populations around our home significantly.

3. Use Natural Barriers for Mosquito Protection

Creating physical barriers between mosquitoes and your children is another effective strategy. Use mosquito nets over strollers and play areas, especially for younger children. We’ve also planted mosquito-repelling herbs such as lavender, marigold, and basil around our home and garden. These plants add beauty to our space and naturally deter mosquitoes. While these methods are helpful, I’ve found that they work best when combined with other strategies for maximum protection.

4. Educate Your Kids on Mosquito Safety

Empowering your children with knowledge is a long-term solution for mosquito prevention. I’ve been teaching my kindergartner about mosquito-prone areas, like shaded spots or places with standing water, and encouraging them to avoid these areas during playtime. We’ve also discussed why certain times of the day, particularly dawn and dusk, have higher mosquito activity and should be avoided when possible. Additionally, I’ve guided my child to avoid wearing scented lotions or shampoos that can attract mosquitoes.

5. Plan After-School Activities with Mosquito Safety in Mind

After-school activities often mean more time spent outdoors. To minimize mosquito exposure, I’m scheduling outdoor playtime for my child during periods when mosquito activity is lower, such as mid-morning or early afternoon. If my kindergartner is involved in evening sports or events, I will ensure they are dressed appropriately and aware of areas where mosquitoes might be more active. We’re especially cautious around areas with dense vegetation or water sources, even during less active times.
