West Nile Virus, 289 Cases and Counting

August 30, 2024

The United States is experiencing an alarming rise in confirmed cases of West Nile virus, with 64% resulting in neuroinvasive illness.

We recently wrote about West Nile virus and the one-in-three chance for Texas residents to have neuroinvasive illness so far in 2024. Here we are one month later still fighting against the spread of West Nile virus and now experiencing an explosion of cases across the United States.

Which state is reporting the most cases of West Nile so far?

As of August 2024, Texas is reporting the most cases of West Nile virus human infections with a total of 41. The first case of WNV in Texas was only one month ago, and with the rate of mosquito activity, we can expect the number of cases to increase in the coming days and at least through the end of summer.

How is West Nile virus transmitted?

Those nasty, rotten, blood-sucking mosquitoes are transmitters of West Nile virus. They obtain the infection by feeding on birds and spreading that infection to humans and other animals. Skunks, chipmunks, rabbits, and other wild animals can contract West Nile virus. Our dogs and cats are additionally susceptible. West Nile cannot be spread by contact with an infected human or pet. Transmission requires being bitten by an infected mosquito.

Are there more cases of West Nile virus in Texas in 2024?

As mentioned before, there are 41 confirmed cases so far in 2024. Last year, Texas reported a total of 92 human cases, 10% of which were in Tarrant County. West Nile should always be considered a potential threat in Texas. With the rise in neuroinvasive cases, we must not only remain vigilant about mosquito bite avoidance but share these measures with your loved ones and your neighbors.
