Dengue Cases in TX Part of Intense Global Swell

Posted by Mosquito Squad

August 2, 2024

2024 has seen an acute rise in the number of Dengue virus cases across the globe. Texas is so far reporting 17 cases.

Those counties affected by Dengue as of July 24, 2024, are Tarrant, Dallas, Parker, Collin, Taylor, Victoria, McMullen, Fort Bend, Travis, and Montgomery. Though we have Dengue cases close to home, it does not mean that we are at risk of local transmission. All the cases in Texas were acquired during travel to high-risk areas. The only U.S. locales with local transmission are Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. But are we out of the woods altogether? Not necessarily. The only way to allay mosquito-borne illness is to do our best to control mosquitoes and avoid their bites.

West Nile in Tarrant County

The year 2023 was globally the warmest on record. Heat, humidity, and huge rains in our area in June, have greatly increased the local mosquito population. Mosquito species are breeding more and expanding their reach. In mid-July, the first human case of West Nile virus was reported in Tarrant County. What’s more, the illness is the most serious sort – neuroinvasive, which can lead to swelling of the brain, then becoming life-threatening.

Whether we are speaking about Dengue, West Nile, or any other mosquito disease, we are all better to avoid them than to try treating them. If you have knowingly been bitten by a mosquito and begin to feel the following symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention with haste.

West Nile virus symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle pain
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Nausea, vomiting

Symptoms of West Nile virus can last for a minimum of three days all the way up to a month. Serious neuroinvasive WNV can result in meningitis or encephalitis. The symptoms for neuroinvasive WNV are more serious than the lesser virus and must be attended immediately.

  • Stiff neck
  • Muscle weakness of an extremity (one arm or leg)
  • Disorientation
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Coma
