Can I Contract West Nile After Summer?
Posted by Mosquito SquadOctober 10, 2024
Yes. If there is mosquito activity, there is a possibility that we could contract West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses.
It doesn’t have to be springtime or summer for a vector-borne illness to befall us or a loved one. And with our agreeable climate, we should expect to continue shielding ourselves against the potential of an infected mosquito bite well after summer has ended.
West Nile Virus Update in Texas 2024
As of October 1, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control reports 880 cases of West Nile Virus in the United States so far this year. At the time of this writing, 69% of those cases are neuroinvasive. In August, Texas was reporting 41 cases of West Nile. One month later, we now have 65 confirmed cases of human West Nile Virus in our state.
What Other Mosquito Illnesses Should We Be Aware of in Texas?
Dengue, or dengue fever, is the second-most reported mosquito-borne illness in Texas in 2024. Our state has confirmed 64 human cases of dengue as of October 1, 2024, an increase of 47 cases since July. While that might sound like a lot of cases, Florida’s Miami-Dade county has reported more than 250 cases of dengue this year.
Can I Be Bitten By a Tick After Summer?
Yes, ticks are much like mosquitoes in their peak times of activity. Ticks have a second period of peak activity at the end of summer, as they are scurrying to find mates ahead of their season of diapause. It is much easier to spot ticks this time of year too, because it’s the adults that are active in the fall, which are much more visible. Also like mosquitoes, ticks are capable of transmitting tick-borne illnesses in the fall, and even winter if the weather is warm enough for them to be questing for a blood meal.
