Summer is Here, and SO ARE THE MOSQUITOES
Posted by Mosquito SquadJuly 2, 2024
With summer in full swing, the warm weather invites more outdoor activities. However, it also signals the arrival of peak mosquito season. It's important to be aware that mosquitoes can cause itchy bites and transmit diseases such as West Nile Virus and Zika Virus, among others. At Mosquito Squad of Greater Atlanta, we provide effective solutions to ensure your outdoor spaces remain safe and enjoyable all summer long.
Understanding the Mosquito Life Cycle
The life cycle of a mosquito is quite complicated and only lasts a very short amount of time. It includes four distinct stages: the egg, the larva, the pupa, and the adult. A solid understanding of this cycle is essential to effectively control mosquitoes.
- Egg: Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in or near water. These eggs can survive dry conditions for several months until they are exposed to water, at which point they hatch into larvae.
- Larva: Known as wrigglers, larvae live in water and molt several times as they grow. They come to the surface to breathe and feed on organic matter and microorganisms.
- Pupa: Also known as tumblers, mosquitoes do not feed in the pupal stage, which lasts two days to a week before transforming into an adult mosquito.
- Adult: Once the mosquito emerges from the pupal case, it rests until its body parts harden and it is ready to fly. Female mosquitoes require a blood meal to develop eggs, which starts the cycle anew.
One Mosquito Bite Means Rapid Population Growth
Mosquitoes can reproduce rapidly. With one 90-second bite or several smaller feedings, a female mosquito has enough blood to lay eggs. After a few days of digesting the blood, a single female mosquito can lay up to 300 eggs at a time. Within a few days, these eggs hatch into larvae, which develop into pupae and eventually emerge as adults. In optimal conditions, a mosquito can go from egg to adult in as little as four days, although the typical life cycle is about two weeks. With each mosquito capable of laying hundreds of eggs at a time, a single mosquito can lead to a population explosion of over a billion mosquitoes within a month if unchecked.
