What is the risk of EEE and West Nile in Central MA 2021?

Central Mass has lots of mosquitoes this time of year, but are these mosquito-borne illnesses a threat?

Massachusetts has had the second-highest number of Eastern Equine Encephalitis cases of any state in the United States since 2004. In 2019 and 2020, our state reported 17 cases of this potentially deadly disease, which resulted in seven deaths. Human cases of West Nile Virus have been confirmed in seven U.S. states in 2021. Fortunately, Massachusetts has had no cases of EEE or WNV this year.

Are we in the clear for EEE and WNV in 2021?

The threat level for these dangerous mosquito-borne illnesses remains low in our area, but it doesn’t mean that there will be no cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis or West Nile Virus in Norfolk and Middlesex counties in 2021. This is because neighboring states have reports of non-human West Nile Virus activity, including New York and Connecticut. Our hope is that even though EEE comes in two or three-year cycles, that 2021 will remain with zero cases, and close out the three-year cycle that began in 2019. Low disease threat does not negate the need for mosquito control and protection here in Central Mass.

Mosquito control should not decrease with a decrease in the threat of any mosquito-borne illness.

Low threat of mosquito-borne illness is never a bad thing. It is very encouraging to know that we are nearing the end of summer without incidence of West Nile or Eastern Equine Encephalitis. There are, however, reasons to keep up with your mosquito control regimen. We must consider during times like this, that the proactive protection methods employed in previous years of higher disease rates are helping prevent mosquito-borne illnesses. Therefore, we must continue to protect ourselves, our families, and our pets. Mosquito Squad of Franklin & Framingham is pleased to provide mosquito protection to Central Mass families, which not only helps protect that family, but perhaps the community at large.
