How Do I Stop Being Bitten By No-See-Ums?

Are you a no-see-um magnet? How can you protect yourself from being bitten by no-see-ums?

No-see-ums are infinitesimal insects, whose bites pack a big punch. These nearly unseen bloodsuckers are one of the most abhorred outdoor pests in El Paso. While they are often mistaken for a type of gnat or mosquito, no-see-ums are not in any family of those insects. Members of the Ceratopogonidae family, no-see-ums species number about 5,000 worldwide!

Can No-See-Ums Bite Through Clothes?

You can dress for protection against mosquito bites and other insect bites. One of no-see-ums’ superpower is their ability to bite through clothing. If you are attending or hosting a backyard party this summer, and plan to dress for bite avoidance, you must consider other ways to keep from being bitten by no-see-ums.

Why Do No-See-Ums Bite Me, But Not Others?

No-see-ums are not known to have an actual preference for one human over another. Like other insects, no-see-ums can be drawn in by body odors, carbon dioxide, heat, and light. They are more likely to bite the closest source than to fly from target to target to pick a favorite. No-see-ums just need blood and only prefer the target that is in proximity. You can wear personal repellent with a proper concentration of DEET – a maximum of 10% concentration for a few hours of protection and up to 30% concentration for all-day protection is recommended.
