Are There More Mosquitoes or Ticks in El Paso?

As with the entire United States, El Paso boasts a higher number of mosquitoes than ticks. As for the number of tick and mosquito species, there are four main species of ticks in El Paso and about five to seven species of mosquitoes. According to the CDC, the United States is home to more than 200 species of mosquitoes, with 12 of those being responsible for the potential spread of diseases. There are around 90 species of ticks across the country. Worldwide, there are purportedly 850 tick species and about 3,500 mosquito species.
Why Is the Mosquito Population Bigger Than the Tick Population?

The reason for this is in the ticks’ questing habits versus mosquitoes, which take flight and target their marks. Ticks are patient, hanging on to low-lying grasses, underbrush, shrubbery, and the like. They await an adequate host, whether that be a human, pet, or wild animal, to obtain their blood meal required for fertilizing their eggs. Mosquitoes, while they don’t fly far, seek their blood meal hosts, invading our yards, pool areas, and ruining our good time in public spaces, such as parks and outdoor dining venues.
Is It Possible for El Paso to Gain More Tick and Mosquito Species?
Yes, it is possible. The consensus in scientific communities is that climate change is responsible for the expansion of ticks and mosquitoes into areas they have not existed in before. Warmer, shorter winters and longer breeding seasons aided by higher humidity and rainfall offer opportunities for these pests to expand into areas previously unknown. More standing water bodes well for mosquito breeding, and denser vegetation is beneficial for ticks, who require shelter.
