Are Scorpions Still Out in El Paso?

Well into autumn, with temperatures falling below the high 60’s, scorpions might have already sought shelter for overwintering.
Yes, scorpions are that sensitive to temperature! What makes them so susceptible? Like reptiles and amphibians, our scorpion friends are cold-blooded, otherwise known as ectotherms. You might believe that being cold-blooded equates to supercooled blood running through scorpions’ bodies. However, that’s not really the case. Being an ectotherm means that scorpions rely solely on external temperatures to regulate their body temperature. They become inactive and seek shelter around 68°F. And while that sounds pleasant for an external temperature, imagine your body temperature being that cold. It doesn’t take a huge warmup for scorpions to become active once more, though. They will begin to emerge when the temperature reaches the low-to-mid 70’s consistently.
Conversely, scorpions will seek water and shade in hot temperatures. That is why we find them lurking close to our homes in the heat of summer.
If Scorpions Are Not Out in November, Where Are they?
Late fall and winter bring with them cooler weather and less instances of pest encounters. While that is a welcome change over the more temperate seasons, should we be worried about where scorpions and other pests are during the cool seasons?
Generally, yes. We definitely do not want pests near or inside our homes, outbuildings, or garages. Very often, they have nefarious intentions as they come close this time of year. Scorpions, stink bugs, mice, and other pests will seek spaces inside our private living spaces. Perhaps the only thing worse than encountering a scorpion outside your home is meeting one inside it.
What Can Be Done to Keep Scorpions From Overwintering Inside Your Home?
The best way to decrease your chances of harboring scorpions and other pests from invading your indoor spaces as they seek seasonal shelter is two-fold. First, you should call on a scorpion control company, like Mosquito Squad of El Paso for proactive scorpion protection during their most active seasons. Secondly, we would like you to consider pest control granules in the fall, when pests begin to make their way toward your homes and businesses, catching them before they get inside and providing additional pest control for about 90 days.
