Though there are fewer species of ticks that call our state home, these pests are still a major issue in Colorado during warmer months. Their bites are often painless and unnoticeable, but they can transmit a variety of diseases, ranging from mild to severe. Our Mosquito Squad tick control solutions in Ault are ideal for helping to protect you and your loved ones from exposure to ticks.

What species of ticks are found in Ault?

Though Colorado is lucky to be free of some of the species of tick that are most often found in the rest of the United States, like the blacklegged tick, there are still at least 30 species known to live here. Of these, there are two species that are a particular problem for Colorado residents.

The first is the American dog tick, which is found throughout Colorado, just as they are everywhere else on the continent. It is identifiable by a brown body with red dots as well as some white markings. It is widespread because it is able to survive a wide range of habitat types, including indoors.

The Rocky Mountain wood tick is the most prevalent tick in Colorado. They are most active in the spring and tend to stay dormant throughout the heat of summer. In appearance, they are quite similar to American dog ticks and, in fact, can only be differentiated from their relatives through microscopic examination. Adult wood ticks can survive for nearly two years without sustenance.

Why do I need Ault tick control?

Tick-borne diseases are most commonly diagnosed in spring and summer, though ticks can bite any time of year. These diseases range in severity from mild to fatal, and each has unique symptoms and potential complications. Some common tick-borne diseases in Colorado include the following:

Colorado Tick Fever

Colorado tick fever, the state's most prevalent tick-borne disease, is transmitted by Rocky Mountain wood ticks. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, body aches, and fatigue, and these symptoms typically manifest 1-14 days after a bite. While most cases resolve independently, recovery can take weeks. Sometimes, it may involve a life-threatening complication to the central nervous system.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Bacteria are the culprit for this rare disease in Colorado. It is spread by the Rocky Mountain wood tick. Symptoms include fever, rash, and muscle pain. Prompt treatment is crucial, as severe cases can lead to life-threatening complications.

Tularemia

Famously known as "rabbit fever,” tularemia is transmitted by ticks or contact with infected animals. Symptoms include fever, ulcers, and swollen lymph nodes. Without treatment, this bacterial infection can cause serious health issues.

Tick-borne Relapsing Fever

Tick-borne relapsing fever is characterized by recurring episodes of fever, chills, and nausea. It is caused by bacteria transmitted through tick bites. Fortunately, it is easily treatable with antibiotic medications.

Lyme Disease

Though Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne illness in the United States, it is not a major concern in Colorado since black-legged ticks aren’t present in the state. However, it is still important to be able to recognize its signs. Early symptoms, which occur in about 80% of cases, may include a bullseye-shaped rash, fever, fatigue, and joint pain. If left untreated, Lyme disease can lead to chronic joint, nerve, and other systemic complications.
