Spring Cleaning: Yard Edition

Spring is here, and we are all so ready for it. Or are we? I am definitely looking forward to barbecue season, hiking, and tossing around a Frisbee in an attempt at some exercise. No matter what your favorite part of spring is, it probably involves enjoying the great outdoors.

Spring is already here and Summer will be here before you know it. March 20th kicked off the first day of the ever anticipated season of plants blooming and rain showers. This weekend I plan to do plenty to welcome it, that is assuming the weather continues to welcome spring as well. As temperatures rise, and I want to go for an evening jog in the coolness of dusk or enjoy grilling on the weekends, the one thing I’m not looking forward to is the bugs.

I’m already planning for how to keep the mosquitoes away. There are lots of home remedies, traps, and other devices that people swear work as mosquito control, there are even apps you can download for your phone that ‘allegedly’ repel mosquitoes. I’ve never put much stock in those types of solutions, and personally, I am not much for using bug repellent or mosquito repellent either. The smell is the worst and it just makes me feel sweaty even if I haven’t done anything physically active. Not to mention if you accidentally inhale any or get it in your eyes.

In my experience, the simplest methods are usually the most effective. Spring is the perfect time to not only go through all that old stuff in your house but also get rid of that old stuff out in the yard. And springtime is the best time to get the yard all set up. While it’s still cool outside, the vegetation hasn’t had the opportunity to overgrow everything, and most importantly while you still don’t have to worry about mosquitoes and all those other winged pests.

You can preemptively keep mosquitoes away this season through a couple of different yards maintenance tactics. Mosquitoes breed and lay eggs in any standing water they can find. Ticks and other insects prefer damp, dark areas to live and hide in. You can cut down the population of these pests by dumping any water from bird baths, pools, and toys. Make sure any tarps are pulled taut to reduce water pooling on them. Check your gutters for anything that might stop water from flowing, and throw out any dead grass or leaves that may have collected over the winter.
