Are There Any Home Remedies for Mosquitoes?

If you live in the local area, there is a chance you may have seen mosquitoes coming out as the weather warms up. Even though Chicago does get extremely cold during the winter, it also gets hot during the summer, creating an environment that is conducive to mosquito development. Therefore, you may notice mosquito bites from time to time. They usually appear red, itchy, and swollen. It can be frustrating to scratch these bites over and over again. Furthermore, this could also open up the bites, causing them to get infected. Fortunately, there are a few home remedies you might be able to use to treat mosquito bites. What are a few examples?

Crushed Ice

If you have recently been bitten by a mosquito, you may want to use crushed ice to help you treat the symptoms. Cold temperatures and ice can significantly reduce inflammation in and around mosquito bites. The cold will numb the skin, giving you short-term pain relief. You may also want to use a cold pack filled with crushed ice.

Try not to leave the ice directly on your skin for more than five minutes, as you may damage the skin cells. You may want to place a washcloth in between the ice pack and your skin to leave the ice pack in place longer without harming your skin.

Oatmeal

If you have mosquito bites that are incredibly uncomfortable, you may want to use oatmeal. Oatmeal contains a variety of compounds that can reduce irritation on the surface of your skin. Create an oatmeal paste by combining oatmeal and water in a bowl until you have a substance that resembles a spackle. Then, take a spoon, and place some paste onto a washcloth or paper towel. Hold it on your skin, with the paste side in direct contact with a mosquito bite, for approximately 10 minutes. Then, you can wipe the area clean. If you have a large number of mosquito bites, you may want to take an oatmeal bath. This may provide you with long-term pain relief.

Honey

You may also want to try honey as a home remedy for mosquito bites. This is a sweet substance that contains a wide variety of antibacterial and properties. It has been used for hundreds of years as a treatment for a variety of ailments, including mosquito bites. Even a small drop of honey placed on an itchy mosquito bite goes a long way toward reducing inflammation. They can also reduce your temptation to scratch the itch, as you will probably create a sticky mess if you scratch through the honey. Consider using honey as a way to treat your mosquito bites, particularly if they have stuck around for a while.
