“Lyme Prep”: Lyme Prevention Could Be in Human Trials as Early as Next Spring

Not a Lyme Vaccine

According to CBS Boston, Dr. Mark Klempner at UMass Medical School and his team are close to having treatment to prevent Lyme disease in humans. The treatment is called Lyme PReP. It is not a vaccine but is a specific antibody that will potentially allow your body to defend against Lyme if bitten by a tick infected with Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Klempner says “In mice, it is incredibly effective, 100% effective.”

Dr. Klempner explains that the trick is getting the antibody in Lyme PReP to last in the body long enough for a single injection to cover a person for the entirety of the 6-7 month long high-risk season, which will make dispensing of it much like the flu vaccine each year.

The good news? It could be in human trials as early as next spring, which could mean it becomes available in a few years.
