Lyme Disease Awareness: Stay Prepared

Over the past few years, you’ve probably heard about Lyme disease and its prevalence across the United States. Most people probably don’t expect that there are creatures that can easily transmit diseases to them, but this is the reality we face. As opposed to past decades, ticks are demonstrating their ability to grow their numbers with incredible success. In our early history as a nation, much of the eastern U.S. forests were razed to the ground, leading to dramatic drops in the local tick populations. In modern times, ticks are now incredibly common, and they have the potential to severely damage our health. How is this possible, though? Despite their tiny size, ticks can pack a significant punch. Ticks, as a result of their feeding behavior, will pick up pathogens when they feed on the blood of other animals. There are numerous tick-borne diseases to be aware of, but the main one to keep an eye out for is Lyme disease. Fortunately, the pathogen that causes this illness takes 24-48 hours to infect a victim, but the consequences of failing to remove a diseased tick can be dire.

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the United States, and the number of infections is trending upward every year. Although Lyme disease only has about 30,000 – 40,000 official diagnoses every year, estimates suggest the number could be much higher. Why? Lyme disease is very difficult to diagnose as its symptoms are ambiguous. Headaches, fever, tiredness, and a characteristic skin rash are all common, but the target-shaped skin rash is unique to Lyme disease. With this in mind, you must be wary of tick activity in your area and implement tick control. After all, it is Lyme disease awareness month!
