Is Powassan Virus in Virginia?

Living in Virginia comes with a lot of benefits. With a climate that is a cross-section between Northeastern and Southern weather, our state has much of the best of both worlds. However, not everything that exists in our climate is beneficial. Our steamy summers are not only enjoyable for us, but also for the ticks that call Virginia home. As you likely know already, ticks are a serious threat to the outdoor living season every year. These little critters are some of the most prolific parasites around, and they can be found in every nook and cranny throughout the state. Due to their minuscule size, ticks are exceedingly good at evading detection, and they can remain attached to their victims for up to 10 days at a time. This fact alone is quite troubling, but a tick’s appetite for blood isn’t the only thing that should concern the populace.

Richmond tick control is essential this summer

Ticks are also the main cause of vector-borne diseases in the United States, which can be found in most states throughout our county. Of particular concern in recent years has been Lyme disease, which is estimated to infect somewhere between 300,000 to 400,000 people every year. This bacterial disease is dangerous on its own, but there are a few other diseases that are even more concerning. Powassan virus, for example, has claimed national attention due to its devastating health effects. While the disease is relatively rare, it can cause symptoms like fevers, confusion, vomiting, weakness, loss of coordination, and more. In serious cases, Powassan virus can cause seizures, tremors, paralysis, coma, and even death. So, you have to wonder, where can this virus be found? In Virginia, we are fortunate that the disease has not created a foothold in our state. However, this could change in the future. While it would be practically unheard of to contract the virus in Virginia, this might change as our climate shifts in the coming years. Although Powassan virus might not be a problem in VA right now, ticks certainly are. To defend against them, make sure to contact the professionals.
