Have you ever heard a chirp come from somewhere in your house? You know the one. Somewhere, hidden within your home, a squeaky, sneaky cricket has made its way inside. Sure, you could try to ignore it. After all, most crickets only live eight to ten weeks… or you could follow these steps to getting crickets out of your garage!
Step 1: Don’t Panic
As annoying as that cricket may be, don't let it drive you crazy just yet. Double-check that the chirping you're hearing is actually coming from crickets and not from another problem. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors chirp when their batteries run low, and garage doors sometimes chirp when their sensors are misaligned. Cricket sounds usually come in pairs, and crickets make the most noise in the evenings and at night.
Step 2: Clean the Garage
Crickets prefer to hide in hard-to-reach places, which in the garage could mean virtually anywhere. Keeping a garage somewhat tidy can help reduce the hiding areas crickets and other pests take advantage of. Crickets stay low to the ground, so focus on removing ground clutter, cleaning baseboards, dusting corners, and vacuuming to remove current crickets and prevent future ones from hiding out.
Step 3: Set Some Traps
Believe it or not, there are actually traps designed to catch crickets and other tiny arthropod pests. These traps are usually a type of sticky trap with a panel of adhesive on one side that catches anything that walks across it. You can spread cricket traps throughout the garage but try to avoid dusty or damp areas. Once the glue on these traps gets dusty or wet, it won’t be as sticky. Check your traps occasionally and replace them as needed until your crickets are captured!
Step 4: Prevent Future Crickets
Whether you vacuum up the culprits, catch them in a trap, or they die before you find them, your cricket problem is finally solved… for now. But before you get too comfortable, prevent future crickets from camping out in your space! Sealing any unwanted entry points in your garage will limit crickets' access to get inside. Check around the garage door, side doors, windows, and vents to make sure entry points are sealed.
