Breaking up The Monotony of Working From Home
Posted by Mosquito SquadApril 27, 2020
As millions of Americans enter their third, fourth, and fifth week of working from home, it can be easy to fall into a routine of wake up, work, watch TV, and go to sleep. As living rooms and dining room tables have turned into home offices, we’re here with a few simple tweaks to help keep you focused and energized throughout the week.
Being Productive While Working from Home
Get dressed and ready for the day.
Getting yourself ready for the day may seem unnecessary, but it has a few surprising benefits for both your work and mental health.
While there’s no need to wear a full suit and tie in your living room, throwing on jeans and a t-shirt puts your brain in “work mode” in a way sweats or pajamas can’t. Changing your clothes also helps your mind understand the difference between when it’s time to work and when it’s time to relax. Plus, when you’re dressed and looking presentable, you don’t have to worry about any last minute video conferences!
Grab your laptop and work outside.
Does it ever feel like you’re spending less time outside, even though you’re working from home? While working outside sounds like a picturesque set-up, sometimes blowing leaves and a bright sun have other ideas in mind.
If your backyard is notoriously sunny, try:
- Facing the sun so that your shadow falls behind you.
- Throwing on your favorite sunglasses.
- Finding a shady area to sit in front of (think tall trees and bushes).
- Ditching your laptop altogether and jotting notes down with a pen and paper.
Get up and move.
You may not realize it, but you move a lot while traveling into the office. But now that your commute only involves going from your bedroom to your living room, it can be easy to spend your entire day indoors.
“Moving” doesn’t have to mean running miles on end around your neighborhood. Instead, keep things simple:
- Grab your laptop and stream a workout video in the fresh air.
- Stretch or do calisthenics.
- Throw a ball around with your kids.
Don’t forget to socialize.
Video chats can be used for a lot more than just daily briefings and team meetings. Whether it’s a Friday afternoon happy hour or a birthday celebration, hop on video calls to celebrate the good things happening at work or in your personal life. Now, more than ever, it’s so important to stay connected.
