Lyme Disease Symptoms in Tweens and Teens

Finally, spring has sprung in the Northeast, and we have so much to look forward to this season! From cookouts to simply hanging out outdoors, the world is our oyster with the return of warmer weather. Our kids benefit too, as they can finally return outside to expend the energy they’ve been building up over the winter season. Despite the cheery mood that we all seem to experience when spring arrives, that is no reason to stop being wary about the secretive threats that emerge around this time of year. As much as we would like for them to go away and stay away, ticks are coming back in our region, and their populations are expected reach alarming levels this spring and summer. Unfortunately, these tiny arachnids are enjoying the warmer weather trends we’ve had, and things are only expected to get worse in the future.

Ticks, in addition to being highly annoying biters, are capable of transmitting several different kinds of diseases. All tick-borne diseases should be taken seriously, and Lyme disease is the most common of these. As you may already be aware, Lyme disease is the leading vector-borne illness in the United States, with an estimated 300,000 people becoming ill every year. Unfortunately, symptoms of the disease can be hard to differentiate from other common ailments, so correct diagnoses are hard to come by. In fact, estimates suggest that only 1 in every 10 Lyme disease cases are correctly identified, which makes chronic cases likely. Although Lyme disease is curable with a round of antibiotics, there are well-documented instances of symptoms continuing well after the disease has been treated. So, what are some symptoms you should look out for in your kids?

Defend against Lyme disease with Bergen County tick control

The Bergen Moms Network is a great resource for leading a healthy lifestyle, and Mosquito Squad is a trusted resource for this community. If you are concerned about whether or not your child has contracted Lyme disease, there are some symptoms to look for.

There are many, and they include: difficulty focusing, sleep issues, joint and muscle pain, behavioral changes, mood swings, vocal and motors tics, headaches, gastrointestinal issues, anxiety disorders, and even light and sound sensitivity.

These symptoms are hard to pinpoint, especially when our adolescent children may exhibit these problems simply due to their ongoing development. However, being aware is never a bad thing. With ticks on the rise in our area, it is important to take precautions. At Mosquito Squad, we’ve been defending our neighbors from ticks and mosquitoes alike for nearly 20 years, and we’re still going strong. Our barrier protection treatments, which are reapplied every two weeks, are highly effective and are guaranteed to dramatically reduce the tick population on your property.

There are many Lyme disease symptoms to look out for, but the best defense against ticks is with tick control. Mosquito Squad of Bergen & Passaic County is your source for tick defense. Give us a call at (609) 735-6057.
