Is the Longhorned Tick Still in Bergen County?

Summer living is defined by lots of time in the outdoors, as well as good moments with family and friends. However, there are downsides to roaming in nature, both in parks and in your own backyard. Why is this? Although the weather might indicate that everything is well, it is easy to forget that ticks are probably nearby. Ranging in size, ticks can be as small as a poppy seed, to as large as a pea when fully engorged. Ticks are one of the main detractors of summer enjoyment, and things may only be getting worse. Although we have ticks that are native to our region, other, nonnative species have been introduced to our area and present a serious risk to outdoor living and the health of both humans and livestock. In particular, one tick stands out: The Asian Longhorned Tick.
Asian longhorned ticks originated from where?
Unlike tick species native to the U.S., the Asian longhorned tick (ALT) is typically found in parts of Asia as well as in New Zealand and Australia. In these regions, ALTs pose a threat to the health of both humans and livestock due to their ability to transmit babesiosis and bovine theileriosis. Furthermore, these ticks can kill livestock by infesting the skin and essentially draining the animal of blood, highlighting the importance of tick control. Fortunately, these ticks appear to be unlikely to carry Lyme disease, which is a relief considering the massive infection numbers we see in the U.S. every year.
Tick control is a must this summer
Asian longhorned ticks were first discovered in the U.S. in 2017, and since then they have been found all around our region, including 9+ counties in New Jersey. Like any other tick, ATLs are secretive and will surreptitiously attach themselves to your body. At this time, not much research has been conducted to identify what diseases ALTs tend to carry in the U.S., so the best practice to defend against these ticks is with caution and professional tick control.
