Asian longhorned ticks originated from where?

Unlike tick species native to the U.S., the Asian longhorned tick (ALT) is typically found in parts of Asia as well as in New Zealand and Australia. In these regions, ALTs pose a threat to the health of both humans and livestock due to their ability to transmit babesiosis and bovine theileriosis. Furthermore, these ticks can kill livestock by infesting the skin and essentially draining the animal of blood, highlighting the importance of tick control. Fortunately, these ticks appear to be unlikely to carry Lyme disease, which is a relief considering the massive infection numbers we see in the U.S. every year.

Tick control is a must this summer

Asian longhorned ticks were first discovered in the U.S. in 2017, and since then they have been found all around our region, including 9+ counties in New Jersey. Like any other tick, ATLs are secretive and will surreptitiously attach themselves to your body. At this time, not much research has been conducted to identify what diseases ALTs tend to carry in the U.S., so the best practice to defend against these ticks is with caution and professional tick control.
