Do We Have West Nile Virus in NJ in 2022?

If you live in the Northeast, you can take advantage of a variety of autumn activities, but there are a few things to watch out for. Plans are ready to be made, including savoring the fall breeze on the back patio and hosting get-togethers for family and friends. Mosquitoes, however, have other plans. In spite of our chilly winters, mosquitoes are a major problem in New Jersey and other states in the area during the warm months, making it difficult to live outside. As much as we'd like for these bugs to go away, the truth is that these critters will be around for the foreseeable future. During the winter, we don't need to worry about mosquitoes, but this feeling will change come warmer weather. In fact, some researchers have already made the case that mosquitoes could become even more of a problem in the future. Why is that so? West Nile virus.

West Nile virus could rear its head next year

Every year, different mosquito species thrive in our area, and these insects have a dark side. In addition to biting you, mosquitoes can also spread harmful diseases like the West Nile virus to people. The most prevalent illness transmitted by mosquitoes in the US is West Nile virus, which was first discovered here sometime around 1999. Despite the virus's current rarity, there is a great deal of potential for the disease to spread in the upcoming years. This does not, however, imply that the virus is not currently a threat. For instance, by September of last year, the West Nile virus had been linked to 14 infections and one fatality in New Jersey. This year, as recently as August, three NJ men tested positive for West Nile virus, including one patient in Bergen County. The disease is most certainly here, so make sure you take precautions against mosquitoes this coming spring.
