Fun Fact About Scorpions 🦂
Scorpions are excellent survivalists! They can live for a year without food, stay underwater for up to two days, and live on one tenth of the oxygen that most insects need to survive. This allows them to dwell in harsh desert conditions.
Common Types of Scorpions
Scorpions are known for their pincers and a curved tail that ends in a venomous stinger. They are nocturnal predators that feed on insects and other small animals. Despite their reputation for being dangerous, most scorpion stings are not severely harmful to humans. Only a few species, like the Arizona bark scorpion, have venom that can cause serious health problems. Many species of scorpions are found in the United States, especially in the southwestern states. Here are some different types of scorpions you may encounter in the US:
Arizona Bark Scorpions
Arizona bark scorpions are known for being the most dangerous scorpions in the US. They are a light tan or yellowish color and have long, thin pincers and a narrow tail. They grow to about 2.5 to 3 inches long. These scorpions are found in southwestern states, especially Arizona, and prefer warm, dry climates.
Northern Scorpions
The northern scorpion is a small scorpion ranging from under 1.5 to a little over 2 inches long. This scorpion has a pale yellow or light brown body and dark markings across its back. The northern scorpion has long pincers and a curved tail. This species is found in northern and western parts of the US and Canada. It is one of the few scorpions that can live in colder climates. It lives in dry, rocky habitats like forests and mountainous areas.
California Common Scorpions
The California common scorpion is a small, light brown to tan scorpion with thin pincers and a narrow tail that’s usually lighter colored than its body. It is similar in size to the small northern scorpion, growing to about 1.5 to 2 inches in length. This species is found in dry, rocky areas throughout California.
