Fun Fact About Mice 🐀
When you think of rodents and the mess they can leave in your home or shed, you probably don’t think of them as clean and organized. But, in fact, mice are known for being excellent housekeepers. In their shelters, they create specific areas for food storage, sleeping, and other purposes!
About Mice and Rats
Many rodent species are found in homes, including the common house mouse and the Norway rat. All rodents are known to be prolific chewers. Left unchecked, they’ll cause major structural and electrical damage as they chew through wires, insulation, and wood. And that’s not the only reason a mouse or rat infestation is a problem; they also carry diseases and host other pests, like fleas, that can put you and your loved ones at risk.
Mice and rats multiply quickly, making their populations difficult to control. A female mouse can have five to ten litters each year with up to 14 pups in each litter, and a rat can have up to five litters a year with around eight pups at a time. That’s a lot of rodents!
What Attracts Rodents
Rodents are attracted to spaces with easily accessible food and water sources. They look for water leaks, crumbs, unsealed pet food, and garbage. Once they’ve found access to nutrients and hydration, rodents look for warm, sheltered areas and fluffy materials for nesting. They frequent basements, attics, and storage spaces where there is clutter they can hide in without disturbances.
How do rodents get inside? Easy entry points for these pests include gaps in walls, doors, vents, and foundations. Mice and rats can fit through spaces much smaller than their bodies’ typical forms, due to flexible skeletal structures that compress and elongate.
