Fun Fact About Gnats
If it seems like gnats are attracted to your face, you may be right! Some are attracted to moisture and salt, which means they like to seek out your sweat, tears, and saliva.
Common Types of Gnats
Gnats are a miniscule type of fly, comparable in size to a small grain of rice. Most gnats feed on decaying organic matter, fungi, or plant nectar, while some species, like biting midges, feed on blood. They are often found in moist environments that contain a food source, such as soil, compost, and overripe fruit, making them common household pests. While there are over 3,000 types of gnats, some are much more common than others. Common types include fungus gnats, drain flies, and eye gnats.
Fungus Gnats
Fungus gnats can damage plants. The larvae feed on roots, fungi, and organic debris, while the adults mainly feed on nectar. These tiny, dark-colored flies are commonly found in moist soil and decaying organic matter. They are often a nuisance in plant enthusiasts’ homes and greenhouses.
Drain Flies
Drain flies reproduce on decaying matter or in drains. Then they spread bacteria as they land on different surfaces. Also known as moth flies or sewer flies, drain flies are small and fuzzy. These insects have a moth-like appearance due to their hairy bodies and wide wings. Their presence can indicate plumbing sanitation issues.
Eye Gnats
Eye gnats are known to hover around human and animal noses, mouths, and eyes. They often transmit diseases like pink eye (conjunctivitis). Some eye gnats will even attempt to feed on eyes and open wounds. They have shiny black or gray bodies and light-brown legs.
